Crashes

Crash Screen

Information presented sourced from Taka (Wii combo by Lunar Soap), not necessarily discovered by these individuals.

Note: These are done after the game has crashed and do not work prior to crashing. These do not un-crash the game but can be useful to view the data from the crash, potentially allowing for debugging unknown crashes.

GCN:

1: Hold D-Right and press L three times.

2: Hold D-Up and press R six times.

3: Hold D-Left and press Z five times.

4: Press L, R, Z, and D-Down (D-Down last).

Wii:

1: Hold D-Right and press [Minus] three times.

2: Hold D-Up and press [Plus] six times.

3: Hold D-Left and press [Home] five times.

4: Press [Minus], [Home], [Plus] and D-Down (D-Down last).

If you mess up the inputs prior to Step 4, performing Step 4 will reset all counters allowing you to start again. If you were successful, the crash debug screen will show up immediately after performing the inputs in Step 4.

Once in the crash screen: - [Start] will show more data (A on Wii) - Z will show the direct console print (Home on Wii)

The input combo requires JUTExceptionManager being valid (aka a crash) - thus if a game crash fails to trigger this you will be unable to pull up the crash screen. This also means indefinite loads are unlikely to allow this screen as well.

──── Miscellaneous ────

Transformation crash

The game will sometimes crash during transformations, sometimes allowing the background music to continue and sometimes not. This is uncommon and not understood.

Pause menu crash

The game sometimes crashes while trying to open the pause menu. This is rare and not understood.

Throwing non-existent objects crash

Discovered By LogitechSDAZ

There are a few instances where you can drop an item you carry in one hand without the game knowing you have dropped it, this allows you to then throw something you are not carrying and hence the game crashes. This can be done by either holding a small piece of sign, which you have broken into pieces, or with a bone in castle town. You must drop them by either using a bottle filled with something, for example a fairy or water or oil, or you can use an item which provides a CS such as Ashei's Sketch and Ooccoo's note. Dropping a one handed object in this way causes link to drop the object however you can still throw it as shown by the UI.

Epona crashes

Attempting to ride Epona onto a map where she isn't on the actor list will cause the game to crash. Notably, this includes areas in twilight.

──── Ordon ────

Speaking to Malo after wooden sword

After getting the wooden sword, Link is only supposed to be able to talk to Beth. However, jump attacking by the kids makes it possible to talk to Malo, and doing so crashes the game.

Changing armor while wrestling Bo

Wrestling Bo is meant to take place before it's possible to have the Zora Armor or Magic Armor. While wearing alternative armor entering the wrestling match does not crash the game, entering the pause menu to change armor while wrestling does.

──── Faron ────

Pulling Master Sword as human without Hero's Clothes on

The Master Sword is meant to be acquired as wolf. Pulling the sword from the pedestal as human with Hero's Clothes on causes Link to look strange in the first half of the cutscene but does not crash. However, pulling the sword from the pedestal as human while wearing Ordon Clothes, Zora Armor, or Magic Armor crashes the game.

──── Eldin ────

Early Elevator crash

When getting to the elevator early, putting on the iron boots before jumpslashing out of bounds causes the game to crash.

Double Renado crash

If you get the wooden statue and have not completed the wagon escort for Zora Armor, there will be two Renados in the sanctuary at once. Talking to either of them crashes the game.

──── Lanayru ────

Kargarok drowning

If the bulblin rider dies by drowning while Link is being grabbed by the kargarok, the game will crash as the two cutscenes try to overlap. This is only possible as human underwater using the Iron Boots because the rider is invincible to everything except water while still on the kargarok. It is possible to have the kargarok dive under and grab Link without being deep enough to kill the rider, and in this case the game would not crash.

Lanayru Twilight end cutscene with Master Sword

Link does not automatically get transformed back to human after clearing twilights if he has the Master Sword already. In the interlopers cutscene following Lanayru Twilight, this causes him to look strange, and the cutscene eventually crashes. However, this is easily avoided by skipping the cutscene with Start.

Door storage under Iza's cabin

Get door storage and then go where shown in the video to crash the game.

Shoot first pot in Iza 2 (Wii only)

At the beginning of Iza's second minigame, there is a pot hanging by the platform. Turning around quickly to shoot this will cause the game to crash once Link gets a little further down the river. This only crashes on the Wii version.

Enter Castle Town as wolf with map glitch active

This crash only occurs during the day. It is unknown what other factors are required.

──── Desert Province ────

Cave of Ordeals darknut crash

Shooting the darknuts in Cave of Ordeals with bomb arrows can crash.

──── Peak Province ────

Start snowboarding race with ball & chain (Wii only)

Using the ball & chain to knock down a snowboard while standing in Yeto's talk area causes the game to crash when starting the minigame. This appears to only be possible on Wii.

Clawshot while snowboarding (Wii only)

Bonking in certain place(s) while snowboarding causes Link to land somewhere briefly before falling off to the ground. Between the intermediate landing and reaching the ground, it is possible to pull out an item. Using this item afterward crashes if the item is the clawshot, but not the bow. Other items may crash as well. This is only possible on Wii (1.0?), as on GCN, Link automatically puts any item in his hand away when getting back on the snowboard. However, putting on the iron boots while falling does allow Link to snowboard the rest of the course wearing the iron boots.

──── Dungeons ────

Forest Temple monkey chain crash

Resetting the console while voiding falling from the monkey chain to Ook crashes the game.

Forest Temple Ook crash

Normally, when the boomerang knocks Ook down to the floor so Link can damage him, the boomerang stays on top of the pillar Ook threw it from. However, bonking the pillar right as the boomerang returns to Ook's hand can cause Ook to fall to the floor with the boomerang in his hand. Finishing the fight while this is the case will crash the game. The bonk required to achieve this is either frame perfect or impossible, presumably depending on the boomerang's trajectory. If you notice Ook fall with the boomerang in his hand, wait out the cycle to avoid the crash.

Lakebed Temple lizalfos pot crash

Breaking a pot near the east heart piece chest while killing the lizalfos can crash for unknown reasons. This has been seen on vanilla and in randomizer.

Temple of Time armos crash

In the room before the Darknut miniboss, shooting bomb arrows from the small key chest area to kill either of the two armos without having crossed the room to fully load them crashes the game.

City in the Sky pot crash

Boomeranging a pot over the void in a specific place in the first room on the east side crashes. This is somewhat precise and easily avoided.

Hyrule Castle boss door crash

If you die after entering the Hyrule boss door, you are able to open the boss door again from behind. This results in a crash.

Hyrule Castle Puppet Zelda crash

Opening the Item Wheel on the frame the Puppet Zelda text pops up will result in a crash.
