Recoil flip is a technique which gains great distance in the air. It's caused by the recoil from a source of damage hitting link's shield. Most often, this trick is performed with bombs or bombchus due to these items being portable sources of damage. The trick may be performed as human or as Zora, since those two forms have similar shields.
Note: The earlier in the backflip the shield gets hit, the more speed Link gets, up to a maximum of 18.
Note: It is recommended to pull out the chu and the shield at the same time, as this allows the explosion to hit the shield as early as possible.
If the control stick is not below neutral starting the frame after the bomb hits the shield, a recoil flip starts at 17.95 speed backwards and decreases by 0.05 speed every frame. Holding up on the control stick does not affect a recoil flip's speed, and holding right or left will bend the recoil flip in the opposite direction (e.g. holding right bends the trajectory leftward).
If the control stick is below neutral on any frames after the backflip is input, a recoil flip has a significantly lower starting speed and decreases speed at a faster rate for every additional frame down is held. Holding the down notch for one extra frame beyond the backflip yields a starting speed of only 14.
Holding left on the analog stick during a recoil flip will shift link to the right, and holding right will shift link to the left.
Recoil flips may not be done with ISG active, as this will cause a hover instead.
This trick may be used to clip through small angles where two walls meet due to the high speed gained.
Recoil flips are quick and easy to do, so are useful at any point where you need to cross a large gap, especially when the ground you wish to reach is lower than the ground you are starting on. Besides crossing gaps, the trick is also useful for travelling down slopes or inclines quickly and also clipping through small angles.
